Prior to installation of CAPILLARY CONCRETE™, the CONTRACTOR, or OWNERS REPRESENTATIVE, or SUPERINTENDENT will ensure that all bunker drains work properly and the subgrade is positively pitched, stable under foot, smooth, compacted and free of debris and meets the ARCHITECTS design specifications.

To maintain the pervious nature of the product, every effort should be made to prevent soil contamination of CAPILLARY CONCRETE™ prior to sand installation. To prevent soil erosion and contamination into the CAPILLARY CONCRETE™ before covering with sand, grassing around the perimeter of the bunker should take place prior to and be secured to the soil by roots or staples before the installation of CAPILLARY CONCRETE™. If the bunker subgrade consists of wet soil, an additional layer of loose drainage gravel should be placed over the lowest lying area around the drainage trench and before the installation of the CAPILLARY CONCRETE™.

Bunker sand should be placed over CAPILLARY CONCRETE™ within 2 days of hardening and watered to saturation following installation. If the bunker liner is exposed to dry conditions following installation, the bunker liner shall be protected with black plastic and/or damp burlap fabric which should remain damp until the bunker will be covered with sand. Never at any time shall the bunker liner be allowed to dry out completely before covering with sand.

The bunker subgrade area shall be covered with CAPILLARY CONCRETE™ to a minimum depth of 2 inches. When a properly sized and approved LWA aggregate is mixed with the CAPILLARY CONCRETE™ ADMIXTURE, a free draining, homogenously bonded layer of Capillary Concrete is created. The CAPILLARY CONCRETE™ will be delivered in a ready mix truck in MOST areas. For those regions that will not allow for ready mix trucks, admixture bags will be used. CAPILLARY CONCRETE™ ADMIXTURE bags are shipped on pallets (42-48 bags/pallet) or in one cubic yard super sacks, covered in plastic and wrapped in shrink wrap plastic to protect the product from moisture before use. CAPILLARY CONCRETE™ ADMIXTURE must remain dry before use to prevent the product from hardening.

CAPILLARY CONCRETE™ is unique because it consists of special Light Weight Aggregate, which contains no regular gravel aggregate. This is an engineered expanded aggregate which has unique water holding capabilities, and assists in the capillary movement of moisture to the bunker sand. Ensure the aggregate gets fully soaked with water at least 24 hours before installation, and kept moist. All aggregates must be approved by Capillary Concrete AB/LLC and meet USGA bridging gravel requirements based on the selected bunker sand, or be separately approved by an accredited testing laboratory.

Before installing CAPILLARY CONCRETE™, establish a grid system to control the product depth during installation by placing 3” Plasticap ® Nails or 4 inch pipe cut to 2 inches approximately 4 feet apart throughout the bottom of the bunker. Slide the plastic cap down 2 inches on the nail and insert the nail into the subgrade. The CAPILLARY CONCRETE™ shall meet the top of the nail head to provide a uniform depth of 2 inches. As the product is being installed and the depth of the mixture is established, the nails may be removed.

125 liter of aggregate
+ one bag of CC ADMIXTURE
+12,5 liter water(approximately)
≈2,3 square meter Capillary Concrete™ (5 cm)
One cubic yard of aggregate
+6 bags of CC Admixture
+75 liter water(approximately)
≈14 square meter Capillary Concrete™ (5 cm)

Please note, the amount of water in the mix may change depending on moisture and weather conditions at site. Always strive to keep the mix in a workable state and have it display a wet metallic sheen with a smooth paste. Do not allow the mix to get too wet-more water can always be added to achieve desired moisture levels-but water cannot be removed from the mixture.

CAPILLARY CONCRETE™ shall be mixed using the following procedure:
1. Place proper ratio of aggregate in mixer. Turn mixer on.
2. Begin mixing aggregate and add proper ratio of Capillary Concrete™ Admixture.
3. Mix for a minimum of 4 minutes to allow admixture to for acceptably coat the aggregates.
4. SLOWLY add proper ratio of water to side of mixer-(do not dump water into mixer).
5. Mix for a minimum of 4 minutes to create a smooth homogenous mixture.
6. Turn off mixer and check the bottom of the mixer to confirm that mixture is uniform and shiny and not dull in color.
To ensure the correct consistency of the CAPILLARY CONCRETE™, perform a HAND SQUEEZE TEST. A sample of the wet CAPILLARY CONCRETE™ and aggregate mixture is grabbed in the hand, squeezed and released.

The paste must be sticky enough for the aggregate particles to adhere to the vertical surface of the hand.If all the aggregate falls off and the hand is dry, the mixture is too dry. If the aggregate falls off the hand and there is a wet paste slurry covering the hand, the mixture is too wet. Do not allow mixture to sit in mixer for more than 10 minutes without mixing.

After the installation has been finished for 24 hours under protective plastic, it is ready for testing. A water test clearly shows the ability to release very heavy rain.
